GLA-EFL

The good lady and I decided to spend a week in Kefalonia as an autumn sunshine break. Only option from GLA was LS and although flights weren't cheap we went for them anyway.

Flew out on the 2nd, JZBB a Boeing Sky interior equipped 7 year old 738 took us the 3 and a half hours south. Usual cheery Jet2 service and an on time arrival into EFL airport which has all of four stands. Flights from STN and EMA had arrived just prior to us so there was a queue for immigration. This passed relatively quickly and the bags were already out. A short hop upstairs to car hire and we were on our way to Villa Micato in Lourdas which I can highly recommend.

After a week of sun, tavernas, hummus, spectacular scenery and friendly locals it was all too soon time to return. The flight home was on GDFX which although 25 years young didn't look it from the outside. On the inside despite the updated seats, the overhead bins struggled a bit. Not much to report about the flight other than it being the last flight home of the season from EFL. Loads were about 90% on both flights.

Overall Jet2 provided their usual solid service. I only wish they would bring in a few other Greek destinations such as Kalamata, Preveza, Skiathos or Santorini. From speaking to others on the flights the market for low frequency flights to Greek islands clearly exists from GLA.

Great report. EFL is on my bucket list. It was briefly served in the 1990s byBY as BY055A/B. Like so many other routes for Thomson it was a mere flash in the pan, one season wonder.

PiperOne and I well remember the ops office in LTN when I asked how their new route to EFL, introduced from MAN, was going. The reply was “ Argostolian, Geoff?” A 737-200 went tech. The runway was too short to attempt a departure so a replacement aircraft sent to ATH. Pax to ATH on a different aircraft, engineers brought in to fix u/s airframe. Chaos all round with lengthy delays.

The runway I think has been extended since then but the airport itself is fairly constrained in any way for expansion. Lots of buildings round it and essentially a cliff at either end!
