Virtual trip report

Post by Clive »

A virtual trip report without any airport queues!

Something I know many in here would love - today I flew a 737-800 flight simulator at Ascent Aviation in Linwood.

My daughter bought me the experience for my Xmas present. Both my daughters and I all did a take off, traffic avoidance drill and in my case an engine fire procedure, and a landing.

When my turn came we were at LHR and I took off on Runway 27R and climbed straight ahead to 2000ft before engaging the autopilot and setting the new heading and altitude of FL10.

Reset to mid flight somewhere, I unfortunately had a fire alarm concerning Engine 1 which was losing power. I had to shut the engine down and activate the fire extinguishers. Thankfully that killed the fire and we were able to fly on with one engine, increasing its power a bit to maintain the desired airspeed.

Reset again and I was established on the LAX Runway 7L glide slope at 2000ft over the Pacific, incrementally setting the flaps and desired air speed. Gear down and landing checks complete, I had to take manual control of the column, keep the crosshairs aligned on the flight director to ease her down gently onto the Californian asphalt.

Vacating left I had to taxi to a nearby stand and park next to a United 773. I’ll need a bit of practice on steering it on the ground as that was the hard bit. The steering wheel is by your knee on the side wall and is highly sensitive to the touch. Cue a lot of over correcting to try to keep to the centrelines.

Our instructor, Rob, is an ex CityFlyer and FlyBe captain and he was brilliant with us.

Can’t recommend it enough as a fun day out or gift experience for aviation enthusiasts young and old.

Excellent fun these things aren't they ?

I got to try a BA 787 sim at their Heathrow training base whilst filming a thing there for the telly. A quick input to the computer and I was at 10,000ft and over heading down into LHR. I've never been a gamer, but that was one I could definitely get into !
