Our airports are “sh!t holes” on X

A thread here on X in which many people, some entirely ignorant of course, lament the quality of Scotland’s main airports.

Nothing ignorant about it Clive. They are. Both of them. An embarrassment.
Anyone can defend things they care for but the facts are right in front of everyone's eyes.
They are merely a small step up from bus stations.

I saw that thread when it started up - and I think we have to recognize that the number of statements being made in it are simply false and Ill informed.

Are GLA and EDI great? No, not really. But they are also not really any different from most UK regional airports. If people expect to be able to fly for the price for a bus trip then they will get airports that are like bus stations. The travelling public expecting some kind of gold plated facility when they're paying £50 return for a flight is completely unrealistic.

Most airline customers at these type of airports want to pay very little to use them (or even be paid to use them!) so of course there's not the money to improve facilities. The only airports that will have better facilities will be large hub airports like LHR which have more higher paying airline customers - and even at those the airlines are complaining about the fees!

Yes but it’s far from unique to GLA and EDI. Landing at Charleroi for example, it was a complete mess and finding the temporary bus stop in the middle of some building works was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

As you know I’m not in to opulence and don’t need any luxuries when I’m flying that I don’t need the rest of the time and don’t want to pay for gold taps or ancient hibiscus trees. I do think airports are merely the place you have to go because your plane lands on the runway there.

But by ignorant I meant a lot of the ignorant comments which show a lack of intelligence, not necessarily the criticisms of the infrastructure and customer experience at said facilities.

Don't subscribe to X so can't comment on posts

But both GLA & EDI are run by private equity / pension funds to increase shareholder value and/or to manage tax efficient interest funding while PIK's limited passenger traffic survives in a 1960's building

The recent changes in investors at both GLA & EDI has set very high datums to be funded and to make a return so obviously any capital expenditure will be part of a long-term strategy and will need a very strong business case to get the go-ahead

How is it then that airports like Singapore Changi which has legacy, low cost and all things between can be so clean, efficient, profitable and award winning?

I haven’t been in the MEA for over a decade but shall sample DOH homeward bound and can compare.

DUS today isn’t any great shakes either; it’s a shadow of its former self thanks to Germanwings/ Eurowings!

I don't know about Dusseldorf these days but if our airports were like Hamburg, with all the low cost airlines there, I would be a happier flyer.

I said this after the takeover - hopefully the German Airport Management can share some of their expertise with their new UK colleagues.

Fingers crossed. I’ve never been in HAM but understand EW have slashed their summer capacity by 30% due to increased costs. As said previously DUS is a shadow of its former self and glory days. Rather like LGW without the long hauls!

For its size I think GLA is perfectly adequate. The drop off charge is a pita but most other airports have them now.

Those complaining should visit MAN, or if they want a really horrific experience DXB T1 or OTP.
