Memory lane-12/5/76

Post by Viscount03 »

44 years ago today for all that can go back in time was the big footie game at Hampden park between St.Etienne & Bayern Munich for the European cup final and in the lead up to the match saw probably the highest movement into GLA for that decade. The worlds media arrived in droves along with thousands of fans from both Germany and France. I remember the Air France 747 as well as lots of private charters but the log is well gone.
Interested to hear if other members have memories from this time?

Yes, remember it well. Once all the normal aircraft stands were fully occupied including BA cargo and Servicair cargo, arriving charters mostly B732’s would taxi to the BA hangar apron, a couple of busses would appear to collect fans at the bottom of the onboard air stairs to take them to the terminal, a quick refuel, engines restarted, a marshaller with his yellow batons would Marshall the aircraft out to taxi for take off and another would arrive. After the match it was even more chaotic as I seem to remember that coaches bringing the fans to the airport would come down Campsie drive and the passengers would be escorted through the hangar to aircraft awaiting in the hangar apron. Busy, busy, busy.

Was still at school, about half the class 'dogged it' and the word on the street was that the best chance of seeing almost everything was the following plan of battle :

1. Get to Abbotsinch early in the morning
2. Bus to Paisley then train to Prestwick around 10am
3. Back to Glasgow about 5pm to see all parked up for during the game.

Lovely!

I updated the report in SCAN ahead of the 2002 UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen - my research included a visit the The Mitchell Library where the airfield log books for both Glasgow & Prestwick can be accessed

I reproduce it in full . . . .

THE EUROPEAN CUP FINAL Wednesday May 12th 1976 BAYERN MUNICH v ST ETIENNE

Sandy Benzies, in his editorial for the June 1976 issue of Scottish Air News, wrote 'let's hope it's not another 16 years before Glasgow stages a major football match' (referencing the famous Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt match in 1960 attended by a record crowd of 127,000). Unfortunately, his hope has been delayed by a mere ten years before the now restructured Champions League Final returns to Hampden Park on May 15th this year. The scenes at Prestwick and Glasgow airports in particular twenty six years ago back in May 1976 are still vivid in the memories of those who visited the airports - arrivals throughout the day, dozens of coaches waiting to uplift the visiting supporters, and aircraft parked in all corners of the airfields.

In anticipation of this year's event (as we go to press, the match will be between Manchester United or Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid or Barcelona so with the odds favouring Manchester United v Real Madrid we may not been in for as much varied traffic as anticipated), we turn the clock back to 1976 in this special feature including airlines long since out of business and aircraft now reduced to scrap (an Se210 is a Caravelle for all our younger readers!).

At Prestwick, the day began just after 0500 with the first of a 'wave' of Dan-Air arrivals, two of the aircraft positioning back to France for another sector as did a number of other aircraft later that morning including a Bavaria BAC1-11 which returned to Germany. A Trans Europa Caravelle positioned down from Glasgow to relieve the pressure there on parking. There was a steady stream of arrivals throughout the day building up to a peak between 1530 and 1730. The majority of the day-stopping aircraft were taxied over to the north side although a shortage of aircraft steps, refuelling facilities and tow trucks created a chaotic situation and some lengthy delays as the fans returned home after the match.

At Glasgow, the day also began just after 0500 however the flow of arrivals was marked by three distinct peaks - 1130 to 1230, 1430 to 1530, and 1630 to 1730. Aircraft were parked on the short runway and on the taxiway between runways 10 and 06 (05 today) while a dozen or so light aircraft were parked either in or close to the hangars to free up apron space. The sight of three B747s on the ground at the one time has, I believe but I stand to be corrected, only happened on one other occasion since 1976. While over a thousand came on the B747s, another sixty or so travelled 'in style' on two Intra Airways Dakotas.

Although not on the same scale as Prestwick and Glasgow, a number of aircraft used Edinburgh.

Management at The British Airports Authority, who back in 1976 owned all three airports, concluded that for any future event on this scale all aircraft would drop their passengers at Glasgow, position to Prestwick for parking, then reposition back to Glasgow after the match to collect their passengers. Since then traffic volumes have increased but so have the facilities. It has been reported that Glasgow Airport is planning for 50 airline rotations and up to 70 executive aircraft. With a Spanish team certain to make the final then their supporters will come to Glasgow while, assuming they reach the final, Bayer Leverkusen supporters would be routed to Edinburgh to keep the air traffic flows up the west and east coasts respectively. It is likely that aircraft will make more round trips than before with the movements extending over Tuesday to Thursday.

The movements over the period May 10th to May 13th 1976 are presented in our usual format although flight numbers have been dropped to save space. 'Lyon' covers both Satolas (LFLL) and Bron (LFLY) as both were used with the air traffic logs appearing to be inconsistent. A number of errors seemed to have crept into the previous data (SCAN 1976 pages JU111 to JU114) so there are a few changes and additions, in particular to the Dan-Air Comet and Trans European B707 movements at Prestwick and to a number of arrival and departure airports at Glasgow. All the significant changes are highlighted with **.

That's a superb post Bearsden.I remember the day well as my old man finally relented and kept me of school for the day to watch all the inbound stuff.Living in Kirklandneuk at the time(Renfrew)we had views of the aircraft turning onto finals for RWY24 from the bedroom, the living room window offered excellent views on short finals. We were spoiled.
I think (memory playing tricks here) the Wednesday was the day the landing FI B727 commented that he thought he was arriving at the wrong airport!
There were aircraft parked everywhere. :D

Great to see the follow up posts and glad I'm not the only old foggie around lol.
I never managed to the airport myself, however I did catch a good part of the incoming flights living under the flightpath and happy to report I'm still under the flightpath today albeit at a different location.

Maybe in another 44 years, folk will look back on the lack of aircraft movement around but due to covid19 instead.

Great to see the reports.

I recall it was a logistical exercise to get from Glasgow to Prestwick and Edinburgh, then back to Glasgow all in the one day with the aim of missing as little as possible, but we did it.

Wonderful memories.
