Newcastle doesn't have another base 50 miles away with 6 aircraft, so 1 airport covers the Borders, Tyneside, Teesside, and parts of North Yorkshire.
I Fully understand that but the crux of the matter is that NCL backfilled the loss of Thomas Cook with Jet2. GLA lost their two Thomas Cook to EDI with the two additional Ryanair 737s. Jet2 has no increase in their EDI operation.
There’s a tentative relationship at best between the old Thomas Cook package holiday ops and Ryanair seat only flights from a different city region, I’d suggest. ie, it’s mostly not the same pax. Jet2 Holidays have taken much of Thomas Cook’s previous market share at GLA, and good on ‘em. Lang may their lums reek.

Perhaps more than just tentative links. I was on one of the last Thomas Cook repatriation flights from Heraklion to Glasgow where our return flight was just over half full as only package tour customers and not flight only customers were repatriated.it’s my understanding of the Thomas Cook/Condor business is that around 30% of all customers in the UK were flight only booking with that number over 50% in Germany. Now in Germany that figure is around 66% and the UK business model was already following the German model.

It’s all history now but the fact remains is that GLA failed to secure this business: either they weren’t interested or that the demographic spend in Glasgow isn’t there. Jet2 EDI operations haven’t increased but those of EZY and FR both have.

ATUK Writes:” It’s my understanding of the Thomas Cook/Condor business is that around 30% of all customers in the UK were flight only booking with that number over 50% in Germany. Irrelevant information to this forum, UK blah, blah, blah, Germany blah, blah, blah… If u want to state stats? State stats from where this forum and most of its readers relate too. UK & German markets mean nothing to this country… dig deeper n find out where our market is… not the market of others.

Ok Paris you’ve had your say. The reason why I quote Germany and the UK is simple.

Germany has the largest outbound market in Europe, the UK holds second place. From my decades of experience in Airport Timetables, I handled all charter flight data, I can easily read, understand and apply data to provide comparisons at National, not individual airport level.

Given that two of the major tour operators were German owned: TUI and Thomas Cook, it’s easy to see how their markets compare and which trends apply.

That said back toJet2. Like the former Thomas Cook operations Jet2 is around 60% plus packages the remainder being flight only business. The package figure includes smaller independent tour operators in addition their own in house operation; Jet2 Holidays.

SoThomas Cook with two aircraft based at Glasgow with a similar operation toJet2. TC are no longer here however Jet2 are still at the same level at GLA not increasing from six based to eight based. An overall loss for Glasgow, isn’t it? Despite the fact the FR along the road added based two aircraft increasing from eight to ten!

That’s the whole point of my post which relates to Glasgow and it’s operations!

......or maybe that should be Glasgow and it's non-operations. ;)
