LHR closed 21 March 2025

Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage.

To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March.

Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.
This is going to cause utter chaos for days to come.

Feel sorry for the poor BA handling agents at GLA who will struggle to reroute affected passengers to other airlines. Sure they’ll be able to move people onto KL, LH, EI, FI and EK to get the majority of folk to where they need to be, but the options for doing this from GLA are much more limited compared to the various rerouting options available from other airports.

Happily these members of staff don’t work at other airports.

These handling agents employ staff at other airports though, and these staff have a whole host more rebooking and rerouting options available to them than their colleagues at GLA have.

GLA's excessive reliance on the Heathrow hub once again backfires on travellers. Shame our politicians refuse to change their stance and recognise that other hubs do exist.

I'm currently at the T5 Hilton, was due to fly home tonight but BA very quickly and efficiently rebooked me on a flight home tomorrow lunchtime.

Really feel for the people who've had special trips severely disrupted or ruined.

Some do and some don’t. That’ll just depend what airport they work at. I honestly don’t think you needed to turn this news into the usual.

You have to laugh at the TV coverage of this, especially Sky News. Since I turned the TV on at 8 AM, this story hasn’t left the screen. In a desperate attempt to fill airtime, they’re even giving live updates on airline share prices, including easyJet and Wizz Air, claiming they’re affected by the power cut.

I can confidently say that very few long-term investors or fund managers are making major decisions based on a power cut. Plus, easyJet and Wizz Air don’t even fly from Heathrow!

I thought that too whilst watching Sky News in HKG. What should be noticeable is the impact on SSE plc share price as the power provider and they should remove board room bonuses at LHR and also SSE for failure to have sufficient back up / recovery plans in place.

WIzz and EZY are out the equation here and hopefully BA (IAG) receive compensation for the disruption, missed revenue and increased expenses.

I agree with the comments regards disruption transfer. Whilst nobody doubts the efforts and commitment of GLA staff, I know first hand not only from my previous working times there but also from my colleagues who worked there on secondment and also who have transferred there from the East. Where you have more multiples to choose from it does make your job easier not only in House carries but also out house as well, I fully accept the comments of ABZ, INV and NCL but doubt if these airports generate the volume which GLA does in respect of LHR and other destinations.

Agree with the last bit, and by the same token EDI will have had even more displaced pax so the task of accommodating or rebooking pax will be bigger. Anyway, I don’t really think it’s our overbearing concern as people have chosen to work for or fly with that airline.
