Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
Re: Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
I have to say a lot of the issues lie with Londoners. Many courses/events I attended were focused on Edinburgh to service Scottish clients based in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. English hosts would say “ I love Scotland” where do you like best I’d say ? Invariably the answer was well this is my first time; Edinburgh is lovely. It is but as would point out there are many strings to our bow: Glasgow, Stirling, Perthshire to name a few.
The only time we would get folks to Glasgow was to visit us either as a business relationship meeting or to pitch for business. Once folks had seen Glasgow they were blown away - rather like I was in Liverpool last month.
What has all this to do with aviation, I hear you ask? Well everything in context to business travel: Edinburgh outweighs Glasgow massively in that respect. That in turn generates greater yield, frequency and alliance partnerships. This is where Glasgow Airport has failed, not entirely its own fault, infrastructure, inward investment and connectivity play their part.
My view, as I said to Allen yesterday in Crawley, great to see you again and a successful day for both of us; you sporting BA me BCal: I do fear for Glasgow. Northern and Western isles, London,Amsterdam, Dublin and holiday charter destinations so like those old Glasgow Airport timetables sold in the spectators terrace in the 1970s.

sorry, but need to strongly refute that claim Atuk.
I worked in Corporate world for 25 years and the volume of people from London and Northamptonshire to Glasgow over that time was massive. Furtermore, Glasgow has hundreds of UK satellite offices within its boundaries.Consequently, the up and down traffic is massive.
The Edinburgh argument is basically that they have taken the bull by the horns and extracted maximum returns from the market.
The three airports in Central Scotland is some kind of ironic joke. Not required. Never required.Wont work longterm.
Economics will eventually sort it all out. But boy, its dragging on a bit.
i would wager that Edinburgh will basically handle 20 million plus pax and Glasgow will be small bit part player.
Prestwick will be two and three bedroom houses.

I read somewhere years ago that the Glasgow area has far more registered businesses than the Edinburgh area.hads wrote: ↑Mon Sep 13, 2021 9:46 am sorry, but need to strongly refute that claim Atuk.

Of course Edinburgh and London have a lot of bankers, I say bankers, who used to create a lot of air traffic between the two cities. Hopefully half of that is now gone.

I was alluding to the financial services business traffic, Hads. Yes for commerce Glasgow and the west holds sway but in the world of financial services where I worked Edinburgh was king pin but a long stretch. I agree Central Scotland does not require three airports. EDI and GLA plus PIK for cargo, non civilian traffic its much reduced footprint with no passenger terminal building. FR would relocate to EDI would GLA receiving more non based services.hads wrote: ↑Mon Sep 13, 2021 9:46 am sorry, but need to strongly refute that claim Atuk.

And if it does it does it will have a negative impact on aviation. Rather schadenfreude to wish ill will or is Glasgow exempt? Rather interesting regards your statement years ago. We are in the 2020s now and the world is different. Whether you like it or not, I don’t as Glasgow gave me my career, livliehood and pension, but the focus in Central Scotland is currently on the east. This was proved some years ago with Diageo moving production of Johnnie Walker from Kilmarnock to Leven and only this month sea food company moving from Uddingston to Arbroath. Industrial moves like this change demographics and local economies.

Some initial teething problems, but they introduced another service last weekend meaning 3 trains per day. The general view I have seen is that they are a real threat to LNER and that it may encourage some to change to rail. They plan to run 5 services from next year, and most of their trains for this year are sold out or nearly sold out.

The current plan appears to be to crowd it's streets to bursting point with American and Chinese tourists, desperate to purchase a CU Jimmy hat. Even the locals are getting fed up with that now.bill wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 8:16 pmYes mate. We always will. Edinburgh has a plan to be a world renowned capital city in every respect and you can't blame them for that. At least they have a plan.Allen McL wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 8:08 pmIts an Edinburgh - London service though. Are we still ploughing a course to beatification of Edinburgh as Scotland's only destination ?big ears wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 7:22 pm I founbd this on line the other day:

Now if this comes to pass and is a success, is airflights from Glasgow / Edinburgh to London history. On the face of it, airflights seem to be the faster option, but by the time you spend travelling to the airport, being there X hours before flight, travelling from Heathrow or Stansted into London etc, cheap train tickets might just win out. This would of course help reduce our emissions and leave slots free at our airports?? It the rail fares can be sustained, berhaps inter UK flights may become a thing of the past.

But the businesses are still making money from the shortbread and tartan tat. It doesn't matter what the locals think mate, the economy is still surviving and this fuels the need for connectivity obviously. Sad but true.Allen McL wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 6:25 pmThe current plan appears to be to crowd it's streets to bursting point with American and Chinese tourists, desperate to purchase a CU Jimmy hat.
