Edinburgh Airport’s pick-up and drop-off charges are set to increase to encourage visitors to use public transport.
From next week, the cost to use the pick-up and drop-off area will rise to £6 for the first ten minutes.
Bosses have said that a higher number of people using public transport facilities, currently 37%, will reduce the emissions caused by transport to and from the airport.
They have said that revenue raised from the price increase will be used to improve passenger experience, grow connectivity, and invest in the airport’s infrastructure.
The new price is set to come into force on January 13.
The airport will continue to operate a free drop-off and pick-up area, which has recently been upgraded and moved closer to the terminal, while local residents and users of electric cars will still qualify for a 50% discount for the first ten minutes.
Gail Taylor, chief commercial officer (XAero) at Edinburgh Airport said: “We have just had a record year for passengers at Edinburgh Airport and that number is likely to grow year-on-year, and we want to make sure that people are making more sustainable choices when getting to and from the airport.
“The use of cars is the most polluting mode with four journeys for each passenger compared to just two when using public transport. We want more people to use the robust transport links we have as this both reduces emissions and congestion.
“We have a number of large capacity projects planned over the next few years, and reinvestment back into the airport infrastructure will improve the overall experience for passengers.”

As the passengers board a multi-billion pound aluminum tube powered by Avgas.
Oh the irony.

If only the majority of passengers didn’t have to begin and end their journey with a 40-mile drive to/from the wrong airport. Emissions could be reduced if those passengers were able to fly from their preferred airport—the one serving Scotland’s population centre.

I’m parking the car for my wee trip at the end of January thanks to FHR and their January sale.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Edinburgh Airport, which will now be known as Glasgow East Airport.
Speaking at his inauguration last night, Trump explained his decision:
“Let’s be honest, folks. I’ve looked at the numbers, the data, and the maps. Edinburgh Airport isn’t serving Edinburgh. It’s serving Glasgow! It’s a tremendous city, beautiful people. This airport is going to get the recognition it deserves as Glasgow East Airport.”
According to Trump, his decision was inspired by his personal experience traveling through Scotland, where he noted a significant number of passengers on flights to Edinburgh ended up heading west to Glasgow. “Edinburgh is great, but let’s face it, Glasgow is where the action is,” he added, throwing in a quick jab: “Plus, Edinburgh already has the castle, so they’ll be fine.”
Reactions Across Scotland
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions. Glasgow residents, for the most part, seem amused, with some embracing the change as a badge of honour. “As the majority of passengers are from Glasgow, then it makes sense,” said one local. “But I wouldn’t mind if he upgraded the M8 next!”
