Terrible news, my thoughts are with the victims and their families. :(

Given the number of near-collisions in US airspace in recent years, unfortunately, an incident like this felt like it was only a matter of time.

The standard of ATC in the US is utterly appalling. Completely avoidable but for the sloppy, lackadaisical and negligent way the FAA runs. They’ve had multiple near misses and warnings on runways in the last 12 months. This won’t be the last fatal incident this year.

Yes and they say “cleared to land” when the runway is occupied.

When I was at SFO on a VS A330 we started our take off roll on the crossing runway when there was something landing on the other. We had to stop then taxi around to the start again. It probably happens every day there.

In this case it couldn’t have been the AA pilots or plane at fault but either helicopter crew or ATC.

Reckless operation at that Airport

Military helicopters criss-crossing the landing approach to the airport

Horrible news. And even worse if it was avoidable which appears to be the case

Unconfirmed reports on the news this morning that ATC advised the chopper to report landing traffic in sight and to pass behind. This was not acknowledged so ATC repeated it again. 30 seconds later...impact. Chap was waiting at the airport to meet his wife, said he got a text from her saying they were landing in 20 minutes. Cannot imagine how people like this must feel at this time. Condolences to all.
