Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
Just curious about this, given Oban has a reasonable field, and it's relative remoteness if not from Glasgow itself but certainly other parts of the country in terms of travel times. Have Loganair ever operated services to/from Oban or has there ever been any sort of 'local demand' for air services either in history or more recently ? Would this perhaps be a viable drop off/pick up option enroute to Barra or the other islands ? Same goes for Skye I suppose, given fairly recent talks about re-establishing that air link...

I’ve long thought that GLA-Oban North Connel-Skye-North Connel-Skye-GLA could be a winner with locals, medics, patients, students, service providers, and tourists alike. Stick a Twin Otter on it twice a day and Bob’s yer uncle.Allen McL wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 11:10 am Just curious about this, given Oban has a reasonable field, and it's relative remoteness if not from Glasgow itself but certainly other parts of the country in terms of travel times. Re: Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
I suppose you do have Hebridean operating in the area, maybe there's a 'gentleman's pact' between them ?
Re: Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
Don’t know why Hebridean don’t extend their Isles-Oban services to GLA. Then add an Oban-Skye leg.

I suspect the school run is keeping them busy enough...
Re: Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
Yes, it would take some new thinking.

Re: Have Loganair ever operated from Oban ?
Loganair operated to Skye in the 1970's and 80's but it stopped due losses. Since then the bridge was built which would probably reduce demand further and I suspect any new service would need to be well subsidised.
Oban Airfield has terrain problems, has only become a licensed airfield fairly recently and I have not seen an instrument approach published.
Hebridean have operated charter flights to Glasgow in the past but the cost of the landing fee, handling etc would take a fair bit out of any scheduled service ticket sales.
It is only two or so hours from Oban to Glasgow Airport by car.

Thanks Ian, it wasn't specifically flights to Glasgow I was thinking of, hence this thread's placement within 'Other Aviation'.Ian wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 10:38 am Loganair operated to Skye in the 1970's and 80's but it stopped due losses. What potential for services to further afield destinations around the country though ? Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Stornoway etc ? What about Carlisle, Belfast, Donegal too ?

A lot of these mainland destinations would be covered by coach holidays, Allen. I clearly remember the EDI coach park on Thursdays with the Shearings type coaches waiting on EZY Pax arriving from STN. INV used to be covered the long gone Highland Omnibuses with a change at Fort William, SYY probably by Cal MAC via Colonsay etc; I know the ABZ-SYY service was a real hit or miss regards load factors and Ireland just not the critical mass to be sustainable.
Right now given the Covid destruction of our beloved industry I, personally reckon, there are too many airports and some simply will not be cost effective enough to ride out this storm. I’m talking U.K. wide here, not specifically Scotland.
