Your first charter flight

Well mine was way back in 1979 just after my sister’s wedding from LGW-LEI with Enterprise Holidays onboard British Island Airways BAC 1-11 400, G-AXMU.

This was followed in 1981 on honeymoon to PMI on board the late, great Britannia Airways 737 G-AVRN. Over the years I’ve travelled on an Aviaco DC9 GLA-AGP with Volta Dixon, British Airways 757, my first ever 757 flight, operated for Budget Holidays from GLA-ATH, the day after the closure of the Renfrew Ferry. It was a Friday evening departure preceded by dinner at The Armoury Steakhouse at the Normandy Hotel with parents and parents in law: an added bonus was an immaculate preserved Alexander’s Leyland Tiger bus driven up by folks from the Manchester Museum of Transport to visit The Renfrew Ferry.

Other memorable flights have been on BY 767s to PMI and PFO, Thomas Cook 757s and from Manchester 767s. Condor 757-300s from MAN to IBZ and PMI; EDI-IBZ on a Monarch 757 in their 40th anniversary year spending time with my sister and brother in law in Es Cana.

LTE 757 to PMI and return to GLA on JKK MD-80 with Piper One when we dined on fillet steak!

Britannia and Monarch 757s from LGW to LXR, SMI, CTA. Britannia 737s from LGW to MXP and RAK, Air 2000 from GLA to FAO and TFS, Monarch GLA-LPA captained by D Giles and 06MAY89 when I was privileged to have a flight deck trip GLA- ALC on Monarch 733 G-DHSW courtesy of F/O M Roast.

Today it’s mainly scheduled flying with the occasional TUI 737/787 to PMI, TFS or CFU for holidays or cruise departure but really nothing today can match the onboard service of meals, headsets, IFE and moving map of AMM, BY, MON and TCX.

Okay.., well for me it was way back in 1984.
Sep 22nd out to Palma from Glasgow on a BA Trident 3.
Back the following week.
If my memory serves me right I think it cost £129 return and I booked through Sunfare in Merchant city next to the old Goldbergs Store in Glasgow..!!

I'd left Bearsden in 1970, (my Dad's job took him to London), so my first charter flight was London Gatwick to Rome Ciampino in July 1971, on a Caledonian/BUA 1-11. Return to the UK was Milan Malpensa to Luton a week later on a British Midland 1-11. Registrations were recorded in a long-mislaid CAM.

GLA-REU-GLA in 1983 a Thomson holiday on Britannia Airways. Took the family on their first trip to Spain and the resort of Salou. Great holiday but never been back since.
