FR close BOD base

Ryanair is to close a base at Bordeaux airport after failing to reach an agreement over fees.

The airline operates around 40 routes to and from the French airport with three aircraft based there and 90 staff.

But Ryanair confirmed that it would be withdrawing from the base in November after 14 years.

Commercial director Jason McGuinness said: “We are disappointed that Bordeaux airport has not agreed to the extension of our low-cost base from November 2024.

“Due to rising costs, we have no financial alternative but to close our Bordeaux base in November and relocate those aircraft and jobs to cheaper bases elsewhere in the Ryanair Group’s extensive network of airports across Europe.”

An airport spokesperson told the AFP news agency it had “put limits on the financial demands” of Ryanair and would look to diversify the airlines using Bordeaux.

“We don’t wish to see a company which has been installed in Bordeaux for 14 years leave,” they said.

“If it would like to work again in Bordeaux, it will be welcome.”
If nothing else, hopefully EZY can be persuaded to operate GLA-BOD for a longer season in S25.

It's their business model. BOD will eventually welcome FR back on a new 'start from scratch' tarrif.

Which is exactly what GLA should have done and still should.
Agreed!

Meant all the contributors on the thread so far. Think it's fair to say that most of the forum would love FR to launch a base at GLA.

Ah right, ok. Hopeful, but this is AGS we’re talking about.

Yes we all agree on this one. AGS really do have to get this sorted or there must be something terribly wrong going on. Golden handcuff exclusivity deals elsewhere or something.

It is very weird that our airport does not have a Ryanair base serving over 40 destinations across Europe and handling at least 2 million of their passengers. Whatever the impediment is it has to be overcome by AGS and GLA bosses.

It’s suggested that there are also issues with FR on ABZ routes.

I’ve never liked the FR operating model. I’ve always said cheap costs and somebody somewhere has to pick up the tab. It would appear that the FR modus operandi suggests airports should let them operate for little or no cost despite the fact airport staff, handling agents and ATC all involve direct operating costs which simply can’t be evaporated into the ether no matter how much FR would like them to be.
