Not directly directed to the airline however 166 shop closures representing around 35% of retail shops.
Despite all those who say they only book online and how much travel agents aren’t necessary it’s a very sad day for staff affected by this. My former shop colleagues are impacted by this and my heart goes out to them.
It’s clearly now more important than ever to book a package, unless you have your own accommodation. Given all the uncertainty and complete lack of consistency regards travel advice I personally wouldn’t go unless I had cast iron guarantees of a refund in case of cancellation.
This will have ramifications: , Hays, Ramsay’s and Barrhead won’t escape either. This summer is totally f****d! Next to go more airline jobs, more ground jobs and maybe even airport closures.
It’s awful! Is there anyone in any political party who cares about travel?

Re: TUI Travel plc
I never use a travel agent.
My planned trip to Spain for the coming days had to be cancelled. The hotel I had booked had a free cancellation policy and was to be paid locally so no money changed hands. easyJet are offering a fee free new flight to be taken any time in the next year (just pay the fare difference, if any) and the Ryanair flight home was peanuts and I haven’t bothered looking in to trying to change that.
So no expense or hassle was had by booking direct and having to cancel.

Sorry to hear that Clive especially when you’d been looking forward so much to your holiday. You’re an experienced traveller and former travel agent, like me. There are lots of folks still out there who aren’t so clued up and need someone to give advice and reassurance. I was watching the One Show last night and Love Holidays ( on Line travel agents) were getting a pasting. Caveat Emptor.Clive wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 8:38 pm I never use a travel agent.

Re: TUI Travel plc
As much as I fully sympathise with those in the travel industry and those with holiday plans curtailed, interrupted or cancelled, I do think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the circulation of people around the holiday resorts, the cities and countries again is already running out of control, in terms of covid-19.
Do politicians care about the travel industry ? Yes, I suspect they do, but what can they actually do under these circumstances ? And that is posed as an actual question and not some kind of criticism. Unfortunately as we know, viral transmission is not particularly aligned one way or another in political terms.
"Reports of "partying" on the streets of Barcelona, the Costa Brava, the everywhere else, with some sense of irresponsible abandon, appears to be fuelling the spread of the virus, at a rate not seen since it all began in earnest at the start of the year. Is that the tour operators fault ? No possibly not. Is it the fault of the travellers, the 'young people' those who cannot conduct themselves socially within guidelines and follow well quoted health procedures ? Yes quite possibly !
Certainly within my own locale, I've seen all types of reckless behaviours in the last week or so, amongst people attending reopened bars, pubs and similar venues. I popped into my local Wetherspoons the other day and was utterly appalled at the scenes I saw, in terms of personal hygiene and distancing protocols. If those kinds of scenes are being repeated around the European holiday resorts, and lets face it, we've all witnessed the "Benidorm Barmy Army" or their elsewhere equivalents in action, and from the evidence now coming out of those kinds of places, it seems a massive sense of complacency, is already fuelling a wave of new infections before most punters have even unpacked their suntan lotion
Tonight we are seeing another mini lockdown being enforced across Manchester and other English areas. I wonder where we are going with this now, and yes my sympathies truly are with the airline and travel trade. I suspect the worst is yet to come for these guys, I really do.

Fully agree with Allen. It’s grim as hell for airlines and tour operators but now is not the time for many popular destinations.
While I was looking forward to a few days in Spain I was confident they’d be all but over Covid. That clearly became not the case in the last few weeks.
I’ll still go, but it will be when it is safe to do so, safe to return home without putting anyone at risk and in compliance with FCO advice (and therefor travel insurance) and the Scottish Government an their efforts on trying to keep us safe.
In saying all that, I’m off to London tomorrow. Not sure that’s any safer but that’s another story. I’ll not be going within 2 meters of anyone and the hand sanitizer is going to be going gangbusters.

Every sector of Industry is affected. Travel is no different. Just got to stand up tall and get on with it. Thousands on scrap heap from all sectors. My thoughts go out to each of them. Plumbers, Pilots, Painters, Printers, the lot.
Airlines and travel shouldnt be treated differently. Its just how it is.

Re: TUI Travel plc
Half year results horrendous, but to be expected, given the impact of Covid 19 on the travel industry.
Another bail out loan from the German Government, without which there may be no company left and hints of a possible rights issue and potential disposal of the Marella cruise fleet.
I’ve said before that the impact of this virus has wrecked the TUI business model. Perhaps we shall see a return to traditional tour operating, less long haul flying and potential fleet reduction of both long and short haul aircraft.
Regarding rights issues: Whitbread, IAG, Rolls Royce and now TUI shows the impact on the travel industry and airline industry. The Whitbread issue is now complete with the others to follow. I personally have not seen such a rise in rights issues since 1983 when BP, Shell and Midland Bank all raised capital in this way during the spring, summer and autumn seasons.
