Golden Oldies in black & white -1982

Post by PiperOne »

A few from January and February 1982, when i had a b&w film in the camera for some strange reason. Anyway, features some of the regulars of the time. Apologies for some of the quality, the b&w negatives have not stood the test of time very well.

Starting on 14th January, Britannia B737-204C G-AXNB daystopping on stand 9, having replaced the Air Bridge Merchantman on the previous evening's Luton papers, while Air Europe B737-2S3 G-BMHG taxies out from stand 11. Air Europe had a weekly charter programme that season, offers on destination?

As in most years in the late-70's and early-80's, Sovscot ran a charter to Moscow for Burns Supper celebrations. 1982 saw Aeroflot Tu-154B CCCP-85374 operate the outbound on 23rd January.

28th February saw Finnair operate a one-off Helsinki charter with DC-9-41 OH-LNB, seen about to depart from stand 12. On the same day, BCal BAC1-11 G-BJRT unloads on stand 16, this being one of a pair acquired from Bavaria Flug.

Coming forward a week, Swissair used MD-81 HB-INO on the Geneva ski charter, and Volta-Dixon resumed their Saturday Palma, with Iberia's DC-8-63 EC-BMZ operating AO1102/3. This was also the Scotland v France rugby weekend, and Corse Air Caravelle F-BVSF spent a couple of days on area 60, this having been planned to GLA rather than EDI. Finally, Icelandair's relatively new B727-208 TF-FLI was on the old Loftleidir KEF-GLA-LHR service.

Super photos Fergus. I’ll wager the AE 737 was on a Palma rotation.

Flight nos were AE631 in and AE630 out if that helps sort out the destination. PMI is miserable in January so would tend to think they were ski charters.

Think you may be correct in that JetBlue. Geneva for Neilson Holidays, perhaps.

Palma isn’t that bad during January. I’ve been down there umpteen times and at least twice in January on the late, great Britannia Airways; on a 762 in 1985. The weather is usually warm but can be wet - one time in February there was snow but inland on the Traumantinas, not in Palma.

Missing my Majorcan week this year.... next trip is Munich visiting Augsburg and, if possible only if Covid restrictions are lifted, Innsbruck.

I was there late Jan early Feb in the 90's for a wedding - it was like Glasgow!!! Cold and wet and yes it snowed. We were in C'an Picafort. Guess its your luck. I visited the Alamo years ago and almost froze to death - that was their coldest spell in decades :-(

Day of operation was Thursday, and only flew 14/21/28th January, so perhaps a school ski short season?

That would be for Panorama Ski, then. Perhaps a GNB?
