I agre my own opinion is that only a monopoly would work. Cue Loganair, Eastern, Blue Islands and a new FlyBe become British Isles Airways.

A monopoly won't last for long. They never do. Someone will see a gap, fill that gap with a service and then expand to compete in other areas with the monopoly provider. It won't happen, and wouldn't be allowed to happen either.

But then competition didn’t last long with BE/LM. At present there are many routes with single operators: LGW LHR LCY LTN STN BHX MAN to name just a few trunk Routes. Back in the late 70s early 80s it was Air UK who provided the majority of domestic services with Manx, BD and DA filling in the gaps.

A single carrier providing all routes or many routes operated by a range of single carriers? Take your pick.

That sounds like the old Airlines of Britain group, administered by British Midland. Loganair ended up a fairly insignificant part of the operation, and emerged out of it with just a handful of fleet prior to Scott Grier's management buy out which ultimately put the airline back on a solid footing, as evidenced today.
