55 years of Glasgow Airport

Post by Allen McL »

Well it was May 2nd 1966 when Queen Betty officially opened the replacement for an outmoded Renfrew.

Here is a potted history from today's Herald.

Steady slow growth of an airport with tremendous potential, due to 55 years of parent company lack of investment, unenthusiastic and bland management, PIK, aggressive - very enthusiastic & successful competition @ EDI, airline/airport pricing, Scotland’s Political - European & Global status, lack of Scottish competitive national carrier (eg. Aer Lingus, icelandair etc) lack of management foresight to grasp lo-co when it happened, lack of infrastructure investment, a rail link that has been discussed more than the bible .... Blah, blah, blah. Probable a success in terms
of revenue/margin for its owners staying in the black since built ... but (all of course in my opinion - never allowed to or given the chance to reach potential)
