Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick, all sharing the same cake and cutting it into different slices. I'm willing to bet that if PIK were to close RYR would simply shift its business to Edinburgh. Glasgow is at a tipping point, Looking into my crystal ball, I see that in 10 years, Edinburgh will have the long hauls flights out of Scotland, Glasgow will be a summer charter only airport, Prestwick wiull be a housing development, and all the helicopters have gone from Aberdeen due to the demise of fossil fuel. So if I had any spare cash at the moment, I'd be investing in a long stay car park at Edinburgh....
Re: Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
Bizarrely I can see more parity between GLA and EDI in years to come, and that's purely speculative based on some kind of NIMBYism back lash in Edinburgh once flying becomes even more unfashionable than it is now. I'm sure Patrick Harvie and co, will have some sway there. (honestly ).
Re: Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
The question that has always struck me is where could we have been if someone had the foresight to create an airport in the middle of the country approx 30 years ago. Could potentially have had excellent connections worldwide rather than the infighting and piecemeal arrangement we have now. High speed rail to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Rail connections running north.

Now if this comes to pass and is a success, is airflights from Glasgow / Edinburgh to London history. On the face of it, airflights seem to be the faster option, but by the time you spend travelling to the airport, being there X hours before flight, travelling from Heathrow or Stansted into London etc, cheap train tickets might just win out. This would of course help reduce our emissions and leave slots free at our airports?? It the rail fares can be sustained, berhaps inter UK flights may become a thing of the past.

Parochialism rules ! But yes, ultimately the central belt needs just one, MAN type operation and not the amount of options we currently have. EDI is not the answer, despite its ongoing attempts to run off with all the spoils.buddyboy wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 5:49 pm The question that has always struck me is where could we have been if someone had the foresight to create an airport in the middle of the country approx 30 years ago. Its an Edinburgh - London service though. Are we still ploughing a course to beatification of Edinburgh as Scotland's only destination ?big ears wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 7:22 pm I founbd this on line the other day:

Yes mate. We always will. Edinburgh has a plan to be a world renowned capital city in every respect and you can't blame them for that. At least they have a plan.Allen McL wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 8:08 pmIts an Edinburgh - London service though. Re: Does a Country the size of Scotland need 5 International Airports?
I stated years ago (and also a few times since) that in 10 years from now, Edinburgh will handle practically all scheduled services into Scotland, Prestwick will be a cargo/maitenance and training hub and Glasgow (assuming we still have an airport) will be London and bucket and spade all year round. We don't need five international airports and we'll have one the equivalent of Manchester or Dublins operations... Edinburgh.big ears wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 11:18 am Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick, all sharing the same cake and cutting it into different slices. Also coming soon from another part of First Group, Hull Trains, is the first direct Scotland-Humberside service, although the last new service was Glasgow-Liverpool, again from First. Offsetting that has been the loss of Birmingham (via Preston) from Avanti, although the Cross-Country services via Newcastle/Leeds continue.Allen McL wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 8:08 pmIts an Edinburgh - London service though. On the airport theme, normally one airport would quite sufficient for under 6 million people. However, the scattered nature of communities and the difficulties of surface transport mean that there will be a need for some small regional airports to link these parts with major conurbations around Scotland and the UK, but longhaul and non-hub international services will be confined to one or two departure points. If Scotland follows the normal pattern, there will be a focus on the major airport, particularly where that destination is the "in demand" place for travel. Draw a 50-mile radius round GLA, EDI, and PIK, and there is an awful lot of overlap of catchment area.
