Yes mate. We always will. Edinburgh has a plan to be a world renowned capital city in every respect and you can't blame them for that. At least they have a plan.
The current plan appears to be to crowd it's streets to bursting point with American and Chinese tourists, desperate to purchase a CU Jimmy hat. Even the locals are getting fed up with that now.
But the businesses are still making money from the shortbread and tartan tat. It doesn't matter what the locals think mate, the economy is still surviving and this fuels the need for connectivity obviously. Sad but true.
True. In Pisa you can’t move for gift shops selling Leaning Tower fridge magnets. Or in Magaluf it’s penis shaped candles and bottle openers. It’s the same story the world over in tourist hotspots.

Edinburgh Old Town is very much a global tourism hotspot whether we like it or not.

So much so that the council is about to.impose a tourist tax to curb numbers and the World Heritage Society are expressing concern about damage being done to the local environment and historic buildings, purely down to excessive footfall. Trust me, once you've stood on the Castle esplanade prior to opening time, listening to a tour guide say "Here they f*cking come again !" whilst sighing, you might wonder where the city will ultimately end up ?

Yes Clive, all the hallmarks of a 'going places' forward thinking international city eh ? Edinburgh in summer is nothing but an over rated, over occupied 'ye olde worlde' theme park. And note, that in itself is about the only context within you'll here the words 'Edinburgh' and 'park' used. It's a bubble that's going to burst and the locals are starting to agree too.

No, Allen, you’re wrong. Edinburgh Park is a thriving area close to South Gyle with a park and ride and good train and tram connections to the City.

Do you get much tourism to Edinburgh Park ? It has all the appeal of Hillington Industrial Estate as a 'go to' place, as far as I can see.

No. It’s the Old Town that is the tourism draw and as you say, that whole medieval centre, topped by the castle of course, is like a real life olde-world theme park. That’s why the tourists love it.

Agree that the locals are fed up of not being able to move in their city centre or for that matter, being priced out of it by absentee landlords and holiday let owners. A victim of its own success as those seeking a return to ‘the good old days’ would see it.

I was watching a Dutch tourist biker's you tube blog of his recent tour of Scotland, he started in Edinburgh, where he bought a CU Jimmy hat, ate the horrible haggis, posed for a picture with a blue faced William Wallace lookalike and had a couple of drams before heading off the following day on his grand tour.

The tour consisted of following the coast up through Fife, Angus, Grampian, around the top through Sutherland, ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway, down through the islands, then Lochmaddy to Skye and finally cut across diagonally via Glencoe back to Edinburgh, where he concluded he'd had a great tour of Scotland. I was left thinking what chance does Argyll, Greater Glasgow, Ayrshire and D&G have with agenda tours like that ? Edinburgh as ever being presented as the perfect starting and end point for any Scottish visit or tour.

Hi

I should have stated things differently. There is an Edinburgh Park  not a theme park but a concrete hive of business and commence and yes it may well have all the allure of Hillingdon Industrial Estate but not nearly as bad as Queenslie or Eurocentral

That’s thanks to Visit Scotland. Time for a change of leadership and focus to include all of our country not just parts of it.

Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford, Galashiels and Melrose, Hawick “cashmere town” historic Berwick, still at war with Russia, East Lothian: Dunbar, North Berwick, Gullane and historic Haddington; Clyde Valley, Lanark and Peebles on the river Tweed; Linlithgow, Falkland and Kinross full of Stewart history, Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms, Rob Roy country and the Trossachs and Loch Lomond, Inveraray, Oban and the inner Hebrides, Arran and the Clyde Coast, all of which within easy reach of GLA and EDI. Finally Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth and Stirling all Scottish cities complementing the capital city Edinburgh.

Something that I happen to agree with 100%. :D
