I see there's some sort of plan afoot now to mothball airbridge usage, for social distancing purposes. Maybe all those jet 2 branded air stairs that generally congregate on the south west corner of the international ramp will see better employment ?
Before Covid, easyJet used the following system:
East Pier - Stairs only
Central Pier 23/24,25,26 - Airbridge only I believe on domestic deps and arr (Intl Arr rear stairs bused to West Pier)
West Pier - Airbridge and rear stairs for boarding and disembarking.
Jet2 stairs can't be used as Swissport staff are not trained to use to them only Menzies staff are and they had to be trained on how to use them. It may seem stupid as the stairs probably all operate very similar if not the same way but health and safety comes in and would cause a headache if it caused any damage or injuries.
Before flybe wen't bust, easyJet were in talks with Menzies in regards to them talking over the ground handling, I'm not how far they got but now with flybe going easyJet must be trying to get a cheaper deal, we'll see if get anywhere.
Jet2 stairs will only be used for Jet2 flights.
