1st day of IATA summer season loaded onto EK website, still showing 1x daily flight on a 777, but obviously VERY early days.

With EK talking about restarting some of its 5th freedom routes from Europe to the US, what's the chances of them ever looking at GLA for a flight to NYC? Might be a useful way too reintroduce a 2nd daily flight and to deal with the lack of direct options to the US from GLA? Or is this pie in the sky?

If team gla had something about them they should be all over that ... but I doubt they would be . Other hand might be to much capacity

Was actually thinking about this recently owing to the lack of any direct flights to the US now....... is the airport set up to allow 5th freedom flights? If so someone in AGS really should be looking at it now.

Good shout buddyboy. Does anyone know if GLA is capable at the moment of hosting such a thing or would there need to be 'tweeks' made here and there that would incur costs?

I think they operated JFK and EWR over MXP and ATH, I don't know if these have restarted. Going back a while I think they maybe also did DXB-HAM-JFK.

The closest comparison for this type of route in the UK currently is maybe SQ SIN-MAN-IAH. I believe that the through SIN<>IAH pax have to get off in MAN and maybe re-screen through security, but I don't think they need to cross the UK border as MAN has an appropriate area to hold them.

Unfortunately afaik GLA doesn't have this - The problem would surely also be that many pax travelling through between DXB and the USA with the USA as final destination would have originated in places like Pakistan and India that might need a transit visa for the UK if they get off at GLA, even just for an hour. Mind you, looking it up, you maybe still need a transit visa for airside transfer - or alternatively you maybe don't need one at all if you've got a US visa! But I think it's complicated and GLA would probably still need some facility over and above what they've got now to handle these pax.

I'm not sure it would be too much capacity because you surely only need to fill (roughly) half the aircraft. The bigger problem is probably lack of connectivity at the USA end.

Even if NYC isn't in play, EK fly to MCO and I believe it's not always been daily - if they want to expand frequency there they could do DXB-GLA-MCO 3-4 weekly.

If you dont need to get off the aircraft its a non issue. Depends on whether the security rules in place force the pax to deplane. I was on a thru flight SIN-CMB-DXB and stayed on board while the cleaners and caterers did their thing and the crews changed in Colombo.
