You’re probably not popping over to Scotland for a long weekend from the U.S. If you’re already in the U.K., Glasgow is really well-connected by train. There are plenty of direct trains from London that take about four and a half hours to Glasgow Central. British trains are needlessly overpriced, so try to buy your ticket in advance, don’t travel on Friday and Sunday evenings, and be sure to indicate you want a reserved seat. It’s also only about an hour by train from Edinburgh, and there are tons of trains to choose from.

Glasgow does have an airport that serves quite a few European destinations, if you’re coming from that direction.

Good post McG. I'll not comment too much on the irony of not being able to fly direct to here from the states though.Who'd ever have thought that GLA would have no direct flights to the USA (except seasonal Melbourne)? Unbelievable.

Isn’t it? One of the things I’ve noticed at the gates recently which doesn’t bode well for GLA is the number of side trips to Europe on locos! Fly from USA/Canada to EDI then take a shorty flight to Italy, France, Germany, Hungary etc the either return to EDI/DUB then back across the Atlantic.

Not only is the legacy traffic being centred east the additional traffic is assisting the loco carriers with additional business enhancing the UK/European mix too.

I personally don’t think an FR base would catch on in GLA it’s obvious the traffic generation has moved east and I don’t see how this can be easily reversed.

Hopefully you will be proved wrong. Usually pax in high numbers will go wherever Ryanair want/enable them but clearly you think when it comes to GLA it’s somehow different.

It would be nice to be proved wrong and indeed I was surprised when FR opened its GLA base. I even used the short lived FRA service but the world and aviation has changed dramatically since then. Now it’s all about economies of scale and I honestly don’t see GLA being able to compete against the ten based aircraft and expanded range of services offered from EDI.

Nimes, Palermo, Bari, Vienna,Budapest, Prague, Copenhagen plus numerous services to DUB, ORK and SNN.

As an aside it was interesting to see UA operating in PMI with a 767 and the multitude of American accents in Palma City.

Americans are definitely coming to town. I encountered two groups at GLA last Saturday, first was a group of 5 or 6 who were meeting someone in Starbucks, and grumping about spending 3 hours in Frankfurt connecting. Then, a family of 5 getting on the 77, having flown to Dublin with AA, then on to GLA with Ryanair, possibly having had a stopover in DUB.

Although not a US advert, a French media outlet partnered with Glasgow Tourism to promote the Transavia flights from ORY.
