Package holiday giant Holiday provider TUI has announced plans to increase its number of aircraft based at Glasgow Airport from four to six in summer next year.

The expansion will include two additional routes to Sal in Cape Verde, and the Greek island of Kefalonia, while this year’s winter services to Sharm El Sheikh will also continue in summer 2024.

Glasgow Airport said: “The decision will deliver even more choice and greater flexibility for passengers across 23 destinations in 11 countries. An additional 180,000 seats will be added on TUI’s most popular routes including Antalya and Dalaman, Mallorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Ibiza, Zakynthos and Rhodes next summer.”

First sentence should be from two to four, not four to six.
The airport have put out 4 to 6. Are we due to get another 737 this summer and they are also counting the 787 as based if it’s here most of the week?
In addition the press release has the bold claim “TUI’s decision to base two additional aircraft next year will ensure Glasgow Airport continues to cement its reputation as Scotland’s go-to airport for overseas summer holidays.”

Traffic Statistics 2022 (larger volumes) are not so conclusive
Faro : EDI > GLA
Alicante : GLA > EDI
Malaga : GLA > EDI
Palma : EDI > GLA
Arrecife : EDI > GLA
Fuerteventura : EDI > GLA
Las Palmas : GLA > EDI
Tenerife : EDI > GLA
Antalya : GLA > EDI
Dalaman : GLA > EDI

Unless of course 'overseas summer holidays' = 'package holidays'

If we ever get a Ryanair base GLA will lead EDI in all of this data set.

Much more positive from Tui and GLA, the airline must be expecting the start of B737-10 deliveries next year to boost the fleet.

Excellent news. If the Max 10's were to come in that would give a decent boost to capacity too.

With only 2 new routes so far that should allow fairly hefty schedule increases on current routes with 2 new aircraft.

I've been alarmed the last couple of years watching our market share of bucket & spade traffic dwindle to EDI especially. I'd wager that this is now roughly 50/50 between GLA and EDI where not so long ago the split would've favoured GLA heavily.
TUI's news is very welcome all the same.

Long overdue. Hopefully these aircraft can cover W pattern flights for BFS and EDI as well as remove the need for an ABZ base.

The other thing TUI could also do is release the BA E90s to introduce new GLA destinations such as PSA, AHO, CTA and XRY and LEI in Spain.

No mention of HER though; is it still not on offer from GLA?

On a selfish point of view , let's hope tui ditch both EDI and Abz and concentrate there ops at GLA

We’d far rather they just did GLA flights since we are trying to claw back market share in the sunshine sector.

By far and away the best news to come out of GLA in quite a while and not before time. The gap since TCX ceased to exist has never fully been filled in my humble opinion. With Jet2 and now TUI showing some much-welcomed increases, hopefully, the airport can push on and secure more business.
