I don’t know whether this has been posted anywhere else but have read a couple of days ago that Westjet are closing down Sunwing as well as their low cost subsidiary Swoop.
I was on duty for TUI long haul flights with the Station Manager who last week confirmed five based aircraft in station for GLA 4*737 plus 1*787. There will be no Sunwing aircraft next year: they shouldn’t have been here this year but they missed the deadline to terminate the TUI lease arrangement so had to stick to the terms and conditions.
I’ve been around the charter market for a long time and know and understand the vagaries. The Canadian market is especially volatile with a surfeit of carriers then bankruptcy. Who remembers Nationair, Holidair, RoyalAviation, Canada 3000 who did exactly what Westjet are doing today. Concentrating on long haul Pacific services against an ever expanding Air Canada. It all ends in tears and Canada 3000 were a well run and efficient carrier!
Who knows what the future holds? I certainly don’t give Westjet lots of years left in them unless they change their business model to that of former Air 2000: leisure schedules and charters with a dash of easyJet for scheduled domestic services.

Re: Sunwing
I don't think the sunwing ops will be missed, awful performance from ABZ and their aircraft are usually criticised by passengers for the state of the cabins.atuk wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2023 2:32 pm I don’t know whether this has been posted anywhere else but have read a couple of days ago that Westjet are closing down Sunwing as well as their low cost subsidiary Swoop.

I think Canadian regulators will be watching this carefully as removing Swoop and Sunwing will make the Canadian market smaller and thus leading to higher prices in an already high priced market.
My suspicion is that Westjet will probably go back to flying some TATL flights from outside of Calgary, my guess is going back to a pre max ops of YYZ-YHZ-GLA and the likes.
Re: Sunwing
Are WestJet concentrating on long haul Pacific services? And are Air Canada competing on same from Westjet’s base at Calgary? I’m not so sure…atuk wrote: ↑Wed Jun 21, 2023 2:32 pm I don’t know whether this has been posted anywhere else but have read a couple of days ago that Westjet are closing down Sunwing as well as their low cost subsidiary Swoop.

And personally I doubt any Canadian airline will be looking to how it’s done in the UK.
