Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
Re: Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
Azamara Quest is currently off of Girvan and proceeding at just under 10 knots
The quoted Glasgow time of 19:15 sounds a bit optomistic.

Heading up river now 2145L - Erskine Bridge in 10 minutes
Re: Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
Unfortunately the light had virtually gone by the time she reached Clydebank, where there must have been more than 200 people on the riverside walkway beside the new college. Although not large, by cruise ship standards, a very impressive sight close-up.
Re: Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
I didn't bother going, given the time of night. Between that and a serious fatal fire breaking out in my neighbourhood, forcing closure of the main road.
I'll have another crack with ship #3.

I had been thinking with your drone you could get groovy footage down at the Erskine Bridge as these vessels pass under?

Re: Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
Not advisable flying around or under the bridge owing to sharp turbulent gusts, it's also within the GLA no fly zone. I had planned to go down beyond Langbank to the shore side at the Woodhall roundabout, but no point in the failing light...

Whats the storey with drones Allen I thought there were a lot of rules and hoops to be jumped through. I have been put off buying one....Allen McL wrote: ↑Mon Jun 01, 2020 3:20 pmHah, I looked at the shipfinder app at around 0700, and it had it still west of Gourock having just entered the Firth. So I downed a quick coffee thinking I had plenty time to drive the 12 minutes or so to Langbank to launch my drone. I checked the app again as I got out the car and the fecker was now showing her sailing past Yoker !
Here's a few drone shots I got from Shieldhall shortly after she berthed at KG5... (Better luck next time)

Re: Cruise Ships for Glasgow`s KGV Dock
It's not as complicated as you might think, and I suspect recent scare stories, such as the Gatwick thing have put droning in an unnecessary bad light.
Basically any drone weighing more than 250 grams must be registered with the CAA and you have to sit a short (dead easy) online proficiency test. Once you pass that, you will be charged around £9 for an operator and flyer ID which you must display on your drone. This allows you to fly as a competent but strictly non commercial pilot. For commercial or professional work, you must do a more intensive/expensive course and provide risk insurance. Other than that it's pretty straightforward to get started. The best sub 250g drone available currently is the DJI Mavic Mini which will fit into the side pocket of your cargo pants and offers great performance for around £350 (or £450 with a fulsome accessories kit and extra batteries).
I started on the Mavic Mini last year, then graduated onto the Mavic Air and last week bought the brand new Mavic Air 2, which I'm enjoying immensely.
If you are thinking about taking the plunge ( poor terminology I know) give me a shout, and I can offer my advice and experience for what it's worth. In the mean time, I would suggest exploring this link and registering yourself with the CAA.

More links, reviews of the three drones I use. The DJI Mavic Mini is a great way to start, DJI (IMHO) make the best products, incorporating the best in-flight safety features.
