Jet2Base

Post by atuk »

I’ve just read a post celebrating the ninth aircraft to be based at…….. NCL! Albeit it’s a high summer short season but that means NCL has eight based aircraft and GLA has seven maximum?

Yes, NCL is a bigger base than GLA and EDI

From today, the GLA base goes down from 7 a/c to 5 a/c. This is due to the other 2 based a/c going down south to other bases for their peak season school holidays.

Returns to 7 a/c late August.

Looks like yet another trick missed!

Presumably Jet2 added additional units to replace lost based Thomas Cook aircraft whereas the two former based Thomas Cook 321s explain the additional two FR at EDI taking their based fleet to ten!

Not sure a trick missed, more of a balancing of the holiday market. Previously all concentrated on GLA, now spread out between GLA and EDI.

For example, for people in Dumfries and the area west of Dumfries, NCL and EDI are both closer than GLA.
From my office in Carlisle, distances (according to the Jet2 app) are:
NCL - 50 miles
EDI - 72 miles
GLA - 87 miles

Understood, Kirky, but surely it’s an easier drive (all motorway) to GLA. That said I’ve known for years that EDI is Newcastle’s second airport with much more choice of routes and frequency.

Newcastle doesn't have another base 50 miles away with 6 aircraft, so 1 airport covers the Borders, Tyneside, Teesside, and parts of North Yorkshire.

I Fully understand that but the crux of the matter is that NCL backfilled the loss of Thomas Cook with Jet2. GLA lost their two Thomas Cook to EDI with the two additional Ryanair 737s. Jet2 has no increase in their EDI operation.

There’s a tentative relationship at best between the old Thomas Cook package holiday ops and Ryanair seat only flights from a different city region, I’d suggest. ie, it’s mostly not the same pax. Jet2 Holidays have taken much of Thomas Cook’s previous market share at GLA, and good on ‘em. Lang may their lums reek.

Perhaps more than just tentative links. I was on one of the last Thomas Cook repatriation flights from Heraklion to Glasgow where our return flight was just over half full as only package tour customers and not flight only customers were repatriated.it’s my understanding of the Thomas Cook/Condor business is that around 30% of all customers in the UK were flight only booking with that number over 50% in Germany. Now in Germany that figure is around 66% and the UK business model was already following the German model.

It’s all history now but the fact remains is that GLA failed to secure this business: either they weren’t interested or that the demographic spend in Glasgow isn’t there. Jet2 EDI operations haven’t increased but those of EZY and FR both have.
